After years of chasing my tail when it comes to laundry, I recently made a small but significant breakthrough. I swapped from a large to a small laundry bin. I realise this may seem like a backward step for a growing family of four, especially considering that the reason I needed to swap laundry bins at all is because the old (larger) one eventually buckled under the strain of being repeatedly over-filled.

But it has truly transformed my life, or at least, the part of my life that used to be defined by the washing pile. The old laundry bin contained more than four loads of washing at any one time, but it was never possible to get beyond loads one and two at the top, or to physically get past the duvet cover (load three) that was wedged firmly in the middle.

Consequently, when the bin finally broke and I did make it as far as load four, I found several items that I’d thought were lost and a whole pile that the kids had grown out of!

The replacement laundry bin only holds two loads. I wondered how we would cope at first, and had visions of that being just enough for us grown-ups with the children needing one each in both of their rooms… But in reality, one laundry bin that holds two loads has made washing so much easier that I now heartily recommend it to anyone else who is struggling to keep up.

A really useful laundry tip!

It now means that I can see exactly what is in there, so no more rummaging through towels and bedding to try to find the priority school uniforms and work clothes for the last minute weekend wash. I can easily sort out whites and colours and get both loads done in super-quick time, and I now regularly see the bottom of the laundry bin, so no more lost clothes!

The only problem – our wardrobes are now overflowing with all those extra clean clothes!
