It is always difficult when coming to that point of time in your pregnancy (like the day before your due date) when you think, ‘we really must agree on a name!’ It is a tough decision as you have to love the name forever, you can’t change your mind (well after the 6 week registered deadline you can’t) and then they have to live with it.
The name you choose shapes and characterises them right from the start. The name you choose really is a big deal and you have the situation of not wanting every third child in a class to be called that name, to not wanting it to be so obscure that it could lead to difficult times, and feelings of not fitting in.
When hubby and I found out we were expecting our first-born (a singleton) the name game began. It was like that scene from ‘Friends’ when Ross and Rachel keep on vetoing names. Both of us being teachers did not help. You relate so many names to kids you know, and although you should not assume a personality trait, you do.

The list of most popular UK baby names 2011 has been unleashed on mums- and dads-to-be. If you’re stumped for ideas or are in the middle of a Clint-Eastwood-style-western-show-down with your pardner… let popular culture help you decide.
PS: There is no shame in having a peek at what the masses are saying… not all of our children are meant to be the Buddy Bears, Blankets or Blues of the world.
The top ten boys names (drum roll please) for 2011 are:
1. Harry
2. Jack
3. Oliver
4. Charlie
5. Alfie
6. Jacob
7. Thomas
8. James
9. Riley
10. Ethan
Ever-popular Jack (bumped from the number one position in 2010 after a 16 year UK reign) remains a favourite. Joshua, William and Daniel have been pushed down the list to make way for Jacob, Riley and Ethan in the year’s top ten. But overall, we’re a pretty consistent bunch; with old familiars like Harry, Oliver, Charlie and Alfie merely doing a polite shuffle.
The top ten girls names (cymbal thrash please) for 2011 are:
1. Olivia
2. Lily
3. Sophie
4. Amelia
5. Emily
6. Jessica
7. Grace
8. Ava
9. Ruby
10. Mia
The only new entry into the top ten since 2010’s list is Mia, which has replaced Chloe (now in position eleven), proving yet again that we are creatures of habit.
What I think makes a great name is the combination of a first and second (and even third) name. So perhaps your child’s name appears in a list… (my daughter’s name is there) but she is unique and I’ll bet that there aren’t that many Amelia Violets around. Go with your gut and choose a name you like – list or no list.

Naming a baby is no haphazard endeavour. Most mums and dads think long and hard about the perfect name and spend even more time agreeing on what to call their little bundle of joy.
The process is fun, frustrating and one of the coolest things about becoming a parent.
Here’s an interesting statistic: 8 per cent of parents regret their choice of name for their child (as researched by Yourbabydomainname.com.
I didn’t think that the percentage was particularly high but I guess if you consider the world’s population, now numbering 7 billion, 560 000 000 people are walking around with names that their parents don’t really like. That’s a lot.
The fact that names roll in trends probably has something to do with the 8 per cent; mums and dads choose names that are popular (usually celebrity driven) rather than names that they actually like (I am just hypothesising though).
To help or hinder your name-choosing process, here’s a cheeky little list of the top celebrity baby names of 2011:
Monroe – Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
Amaya Josephine – Adopted daughter Mariska Hargitay
Gemma – Kristin Davis
Hattie – Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott
Madison – Spice Girl Melanie Brown
Delilah – Kimberly Stewart and Benicio del Toro
Clover – Actor Neal McDonough
Haven – Jessica Alba and Cash Warren

So Posh is having a girl; confirmed by Mr Beckham himself:
“Obviously, we’re very lucky to be expecting again, and this is the first time I’m going to say it: It’s a little girl. We’re still in shock. Obviously, having three boys, you kind of expect another one, so finding out a little girl is in there is surprising, but, obviously, we are over the moon”.
How lovely! Pity Posh wasted her favourite female names on her dogs Twiggy and Coco – called after the fashionista’s best-loved designers. Coco’s okay but Twiggy… seriously! You so lucked out on that one baby Beckham.
So, what will the new Beckham baby be called?
According to The Mirror, a source has revealed that Posh and Becks have spent hours with baby books but nothing trumps Coco.
David made it clear that he won’t name his daughter after a big-bellied bulldog (good for you David), and apparently Victoria’s worried silly and is having sleepless nights thinking up a solution.
Oh to live in celebdom where life’s greatest hassle is choosing a name for your child.
