Jennifer Garner’s secret to looking good

16th Feb

Gorgeous Jennifer Garner is pregnant with her third babs – brave lady! What I want to know is the lovely Mrs Affleck’s secret to looking good.

In a recent interview with the Pregnancy & Birth, Jen said two things about putting on weight during pregnancy:

“I’m not a woman who stays tiny while pregnant, like I thought I would.  I definitely give myself the freedom to eat whatever I want.”

But wait ladies… before you climb on your ‘she’s just one of those lucky mums who eats what she wants and bounces right back after birth’ band wagon! The secret to looking good comes down to is this – Jen is sensible:

“I try to eat in a way that makes me feel good. If that means having a little bit of chocolate, I do that, but I try not to use food as a reward for myself. I’m through the whole ‘Oh, that was just so hard, I want an ice cream’ thing. I just try to be smart and consistent about the way I work out, and go to the gym at least twice a week if I can.”

Retro-style breastfeeding range

29th Jan

Breastfeeding is cool. Except for the way in which it limits one’s wardrobe.

When I was breastfeeding my baby girl, practicality ensured that more than half the clothes I own were off limits.

And I am not a fan of practical dressing. Neither am I a fan of ‘breastfeeding attire’ – nothing ever suits my vibe. So I sacrificed my style for ten months.

BUT, and I am very happy to report this BUT, designer Liz Jeans has launched a funky, retro-style breastfeeding range. The long and short-sleeved T-shirts are pretty simple in style but feature amazing graphics, which totally ups the ‘cool mum’ factor.

The tees are two shirts in one. The top t-shirt is just like a regular tee, and below is a hidden under vest with nursing openings on both sides.

5 tips on how to look good fast

13th Aug

Here’s a frequency in my life as a mum: I exit my house, as my foot crosses the threshold and the fresh air confronts my face I look up to the heavens and whisper a silent ‘thank you’ to God in heaven for the gift of big sunglasses.

Let me reiterate the word frequency.

I’m all about looking good but sometimes there is just no time for preening. It’s a fact of motherhood.

My sunglasses are the biggest of the big and they hid a cacophony of sins. They are my lifeline to the world of dignity and self-esteem.

Luckily I look good in gargantuan goggles. However, if sizable sunglasses aren’t how you roll, Practical Parenting & Pregnancy has written a mum’s guide on how to look good fast.

Don’t leave home without…

Be pregnant and proud!

12th Aug

At the not-so-long-ago Film Festival in Cannes, French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg took maternity wear to a whole new level by arriving for the premiere of her film Melancholia in a sheer black dress, clearly exposing a see-through bra.

The provocative gown, which boasted a plunging neckline that cut down to her burgeoning bump, stunned onlookers who stood agape as the actress strolled down the red carpet.

Gainsbourg’s attire begs the question: how much is too much? Modern society teaches women to be proud of their burgeoning baby bumps and yet, as an aesthetic expression of love, a baby bump is undeniably personal. Or is it?

Why should you not be pregnant and proud?!

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I didn’t think twice about strutting around in a string bikini on a holiday in Croatia; I loved my bump and wanted to show it off. And yet I look at Charlotte Gainsbourg’s get-up with judgmental horror etched across my face.

My attitude smacks of hypocrisy.

In my defense, there is a mitigating factor and it is called ‘context.’ A bikini on a beach might be considered perhaps a tad more appropriate than exposing all (or most) at a red-carpet event. Does the Gainsbourg dress cheapen pregnancy? And should the actress care what we think anyway?

In all likelihood, she doesn’t. Good on her!

When considering the issue of how much pregnant belly and body is okay to expose, I am reminded of Demi Moore’s seven-month-pregnant, naked body on the cover of Vanity Fair.
