Sunburn

Most of us know that the sun, even in the UK, can have a harmful effect. Therefore, if you are on holiday or outdoors in the UK for extended periods of time, remember to take the following simple precautions to avoid the chance of sunburn:

  • Avoid the sun at the hottest times of the day, between 11-3pm
  • Build up your time in the sun gradually over a number of days if possible
  • Use a sunscreen suitable for your needs, bearing in mind that if you are fair- skinned you will need a higher sun protection factor (SPF). Children’s skin is delicate & can be sensitive so ensure they too are protected by using a sunscreen with a high SPF
  • Apply sunscreen liberally before venturing out in the sun
  • Re-apply regularly, particularly if you have been swimming
  • Protect your head with a hat
  • Drink plenty of fluids to keep you hydrated

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may be caught out and end up with sunburnt skin so that it becomes hot, red, sore and possibly blistered. If you do get sunburnt, take a cool shower or use a cold compress. Be sure to wash off any salt water as salt aggravates sore skin. Then apply a soothing cream.

Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream can help treat sunburnt skin. Its mild anaesthetic properties help to soothe the soreness, whilst the emollient effect helps to maintain the condition of the skin, leaving it soft and supple.
