Time management tips for busy parents

Time is precious, especially when you have children. While you may not be able to avoid chaos altogether, here are some great tips for busy parents to help you manage your time and make the most of special moments.

Look at how you spend your time

Experts say that most people spend up to an hour each day on tasks that could be put on hold or eliminated from your schedule completely. Take a moment to evaluate any things that aren’t necessary or important to your day.

Prioritise the things you need to do

The key to managing your time more effectively is to know what’s a priority and what’s not. Take care of the things that need to be done immediately and schedule in time for other things that are less important and aren’t time sensitive.

Pick your battles

Decide what you can live with and what really bothers you. For example, if you can’t stand having a dirty kitchen floor then clean it. But if having a couple of piles of laundry waiting to go in the washer doesn’t get on your nerves so much, then leave that for another time.

Multi-task where you can

This is a superpower that parents have, so why not utilise it to the full? If you need to make a call but you know you’ll be on hold for ages, then do it while you cook dinner. If the children are doing their homework then empty the dishwasher at the same time, while being close by to help them if needed.

Delegate chores

There’s no rule saying all jobs around the house are the responsibility of the parents. Get your family involved with helping – even young children can tidy, set the table for dinner or help to load the washing machine.

Be ready to go

Keep a bag by the front door that’s full of the essentials you need when you go out. Fill it with nappies, snacks, wipes and anything else you might need so you can just grab it and go.
