Renowned wit, playwright and author Oscar Wilde may have been born over 160 years ago, but that doesn’t mean that the golden nuggets of advice scattered throughout his works are no longer relevant. These are just a few excellent insights from his impressive collection of writings that are words to live by in modern-day life.
“Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.”
What is life without love? It doesn’t matter who or what you love, so long as you keep love in your life somewhere.
“Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.”
We all make mistakes. You can dwell on them and curse your own fallibility, or you can look on the bright side and consider your mistakes to be helpful learning experiences.
“The truth is rarely pure and never simple.”
Life isn’t black and white and it’s important we remember that. Always take time to look at both sides of any argument and consider extenuating circumstances.
“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.”
Try your best to love yourself, “imperfections” and all, and you’ll be so much happier. After all, you know who’ll always be there for you? You will.
Ordinary riches can be stolen; real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.
Essentially, do what makes you happy. Don’t focus on getting big flashy cars and massive mansions. Invest in what matters. You know what beats having loads of money in the bank? Having friends and family around you and being happy in who you are and the life you lead.
Pretty good advice right? But we couldn’t finish this post without this last quote from Mr Wilde; “The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself.”
