When you first find out you’re going to have a baby, the road ahead is usually paved with admirable intentions – particularly when it comes to healthy eating. But then morning sickness sideswipes your plans, and even when you regain some semblance of appetite, fatigue has you chasing sugar, and hormonal swings akin to PMS on steroids have you cramming in all things nutritionally defunct.
Introducing your little one to the world of flavours is exciting – there’s so much out there for his budding palate to explore, and starting off with the good stuff is a sure way to set him up for a lifetime of healthy eating.
I had to let a lot of things go when I became a parent. Besides the obvious – the memory of mammaries that didn’t require a hoist system, or the set of abs now set aside and split apart to house a human – I also found that my once-stringent notion of ‘hygiene’ would have to be altered if I was to remain sane in the constant company of a small child.
In short, I had to adopt the 5 second rule (or *ahem* ten second rule) if I was to avoid meltdowns over spilled ice-creams, dropped crackers, and top-heavy bananas. Continue reading
